Everybody Wants to Rule the World covers

After watching Mr. Robot’s S02E08 and heard Portia Doubleday sing Everybody Wants to Rule the World in a karaoke bar I got totally hooked on the tune and just couldn’t let it go from my head. And since the whole thing started with someone else singing the song and it was not the original Tears For Fears version, I started searching for even more renditions of this track.

This is how I came across the 2014 Spotify Landmark recording of the song with the original band just 30 years after and it’s an awesome video to watch, also the guys just totally kill it even 30 years later. This video is right here below, and then there are some more covers after it that I found interesting.

Killing Joke – Pylon

The new Killing Joke full length has dropped and it is so amazing that I am literally stunned to do anything else. I just sit and listen to it go along, and my thoughts are exploding all over the universe.

I had this rush when I listened to the two forerunner singles and then dug through to the Killing Joke discography in full. My conclusion was that the debut album was groundbreaking by all means, but then the more artistic and avant-garde styles did not appeal to me. Then when they turned towards the sound, which dominates as of today, this harsh industrial rock with stomping drums and commanding vocals, this is something when the band arrives home to me.

The record of 2003 well deserved its self-titled nature, as it defined something new and I was so happy with what it brought. Pylon now builds upon this face of the Joke but also has some hints of their early past with singed verses and echoing guitars. This is something I cannot unlisten and will carry with me, I can feel that.

Witch – Witch: We Intend to Cause Havoc!

Psychedelic rock and blues from Zambia in the ‘70s. Wait, what? I still have to read upon this whole topic because it sounds extremely exciting, even more so since the music is just dope. For now all I can say is that there is this box set with 4 CDs and 6 LPs and the full catalog of the band, 54 songs, almost 4 hours of material. And pure gold.

Future – Horizons

You can identify Future by being the other band of Christian Bland from The Black Angels. Some say it’s cold and dark and shoegaze noise pop. I say it is another great goth meets no-wave revival thing. Great atmosphere all over. I usually don’t provide links but this one is not easy to search so here’s the album on Bandcamp.

I see a red door and I want it painted black
No colors anymore I want them to turn black

I wanna see the sun blotted out from the sky
I wanna see it painted black

Jupiter Lion is a great psychedelic rock band, playing mostly instrumental electronics-fuelled drum-centric stuff with heavy dragging beats. Listening to them playing live right now, note for self: check out their recordings as well.

Ludovico Einaudi – Taranta Project

World music kind of thing. Italian traditional music from Salento mixed with North African and Turkish flavours, tuned to the voices of jazz, rock, folk, and in some cases soundtrack-like grandiose orchestrations. For me it resembles Dead Can Dance on quite a wide range from the medieval sounds to the Spiritchaser’s ethnic fusion. It is a very unique and interesting record.
