This was so much better than what I had expected. I expected a Friday night semi-dumb rom-com, and what I got was an entertaining and kind coming of age movie. It’s a solid 7/10.
My Old Ass (2024)
Dark Star (1974)
This movie was hilarious, I loved it. It’s old and shitty, well, it’s a university project that made it into a flick, but every second is just gold. All of its ideas and jokes are ones that I want to tell people about while remembering the scenes.
The more I learned about the background of this, the more it solidified for me that this is a movie history gem: first film by Carpenter (not a horror but a comedy), first writing by Dan O’Bannon (who then turned it into a serious tone and wrote Alien).
It is also a perfect film club flick: there’s a lot to talk about and must be a blast to watch with an interested crowd or a group of friends.
Be Kind Rewind (2008)
Such a great premise, it’s hilarious and fun. The lead-up about how the tapes get wiped is so unnecessarily over the top, but already sets the tone for what level of ridiculous one should expect. It’s also funny and full of heart. This is a new entry on my favorites list.
Crashing (2016)
Funny and quirky, full of moments of “omg, can’t watch, why, can’t not watch”. In a way it’s a very British take on the Friends-template: starting-out young people hanging together, just not living in an unaffordable large apartment over Manhattan, but squatting in a run-down hospital.
Also, I adore Phoebe Waller-Bridge, I cannot imagine why the industry doesn’t squeeze more producing and writing out of her, she’s an absolute blast both as a creator and as an actress.
Finally, this is a dense piece, because there’s not just one but two manic pixie dream girls in a seven-person cast. Although I could argue that besides Lulu and Melody, Fred is also one (being Sam’s pixie) so that would make it three.
Jim Jefferies – The Night Talker Tour
The new show is fantastic. Today was the opening of the European leg of the tour and it was just great, so much Jim, such Jefferies. I only knew one routine from all the material and that’s only because I’m mostly up to date with watching the Jim Jefferies Show weekly, other than that all new stuff and all’s good. I felt like such a fanboy clapping and rubbing hands before anything was going on, but I truly think it’s not just fanboyism going on, I laughed my ass off.
So far my best stand-up comedy experience ever was at the Laugh Factory in Los Angeles last year. This one came right on par with that, but with the fan inside me added, it just jumped to the first spot.
